How to Prep for Laser Hair Removal: A Simple Guide for Smooth Results

May 16, 2025

Thinking about laser hair removal? You’re not alone. Many women in New Jersey are choosing this long-term hair reduction treatment for smoother skin and less time spent shaving or waxing. But before you step into your first session, it’s important to prepare properly.

Here’s what you need to know to make the most out of your laser hair removal treatment.

Why Prep Matters

Laser hair removal works by targeting the pigment in your hair follicles. The laser needs contrast between your skin and the hair, and your hair must be in the right growth phase. Without proper prep, you might not get the full benefits—or worse, you could end up with irritation.

The good news? With a little planning, you can make the process smoother, safer, and more effective.

1. Avoid Waxing or Tweezing Beforehand

To be effective, the laser needs to detect the hair root. Waxing and tweezing remove the hair from the root—so avoid both for at least 4–6 weeks before your appointment. Shaving is fine (and even recommended), but more on that below.

2. Shave 24 Hours Before

Shaving the treatment area the day before your session helps prevent surface hair from absorbing too much of the laser’s energy. You want the laser to go straight to the follicle—not get caught up in long hair above the skin.

Make sure not to shave right before your appointment. Doing it too close to treatment can leave the skin sensitive and increase the risk of irritation.

3. Skip the Tanning

This includes sunbathing, tanning beds, and even self-tanners. Tanned skin has more pigment, which makes it harder for the laser to distinguish between skin and hair. That can reduce effectiveness and raise the risk of burns or discoloration.

Avoid tanning for at least 2 weeks before (and after) your session. Use sunscreen daily if you’re spending time outdoors.

4. Avoid Certain Products

Stop using retinoids, glycolic acid, salicylic acid, and other exfoliants at least 3–5 days before your treatment. These products can make your skin more sensitive, increasing your risk of redness or peeling afterward.

Also skip heavy lotions, oils, or deodorants on the day of your appointment—especially if you’re treating underarms.

5. Stay Hydrated and Moisturized

Healthy, hydrated skin responds better to laser treatments. Start moisturizing daily at least a week ahead, and drink plenty of water. Well-hydrated skin heals faster, too.

Just remember: skip lotion the day of your treatment.

6. Wear Comfortable Clothing

If you’re treating your bikini line, legs, or underarms, opt for loose, breathable clothing. Tight fabrics can rub and irritate the skin after treatment. Cotton is your friend here.

7. Talk to Your Provider About Medications

Some medications can make your skin more photosensitive (like certain antibiotics or acne medications). Always let your provider know what you’re taking, even over-the-counter products.

At JP Beauty Aesthetics, we do a full consultation before starting any treatment to make sure you’re a good candidate and everything is safe for your skin type. Learn more about our laser hair removal services here.

8. Know What to Expect

Your first session might take 15 to 60 minutes, depending on the area. Most people describe the sensation as a rubber band snap—quick, tolerable, and totally worth it. Mild redness or swelling is normal afterward and usually fades within a few hours.

You won’t see instant results. Hair will shed over time, and multiple sessions (usually 6–8 spaced a few weeks apart) are needed for best results.

9. Plan Around Special Events

Laser hair removal can leave your skin slightly red and sensitive for a day or two. Don’t schedule your appointment right before a big beach trip or event where you’ll want to wear revealing clothes. Give your skin time to calm down and do its thing.

Final Thoughts

Understanding how to prep for laser hair removal isn’t just about maximizing results—it’s also about avoiding discomfort and complications. Skipping the prep steps can lead to patchy outcomes, irritated skin, or even burns in some cases. When clients come in fully prepared, the session goes more smoothly, and the chances of needing extra treatments are lower. Think of it as setting your skin up for success—you want it calm, clean, and ready to respond to the laser.
